Data Visualization and Sustainability

Data Visualization of Sustainability at CSUSM

In Fall 2017, CSUSM students examined sustainability – use and consumption, resources and conservation, individual and collective responses – in order to create a picture of sustainability as it relates to CSUSM.

How can energy be conveyed through sculptural forms, or personal expression mingle with sound pollution? Students selected themes and then worked with sustainability manager Juliana Goodlaw-Morris to source campus-related datasets, pursued research topics with humanities librarian Torie Quiñonez, and made art about local and global issues. Their efforts are part of a Campus as a Living Lab (CALL) initiative to transform VSAR 411 Data Visualization to focus on sustainability through innovative research.
