The process of development and creation followed my effort to compose a song with a curvature in sound waves and melody that mimics the graph of the waste stream’s data. The composed music visualizes the graph with recycling data from late last year and this year. The synth lead depicts the graph and is accompanied by a techno beat with “danceable data.”
This project incorporates the data from the waste stream collected from the recycling yard on the CSUSM campus. I began with the idea of connecting the Midway documentary on plastic waste and creating a data visualization of how much plastic waste is in our environment. There is the Pacific garbage patch that circulates human waste and plastic waste that ends up in the stomachs of many birds. That prompted me to connect the dots and to create what I refer to as “danceable data.” Birds are a species of animals that create music and I wanted to compose music using that waste stream data and in particular the data from CSUSM’s recycling yard.
